Additive Manufacturing (AM) is one of the advanced manufacturing method. Additive manufacturing method includes a number of technologies. Various types of additive manufacturing or 3D printing has been discussed previously, if you want to read it, pleas click here. In this article we will study about the materials used in additive manufacturing or 3D Printing.
Primary materials used in additive manufacturing are:
- Polymers
- Metals
- Ceramics

Nowadays, composite is also being used in 3D printing. The composite is a material, which is made up of two different materials. The composite used in 3D printing may be of:
- Composite of Metal and Polymer
- Composite of Polymer and Ceramics

Polymers
Polymer is most popular in 3D printing, because it is cheap and technology which used polymer as feed material for 3D printing, are also easily available and simple in design. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is one of those technology. It is also called as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). You can buy a 3D printer based on FFF technology starting from ₹ 15,000 - ₹ 20,000.
A few examples of polymers used in this technology are:
- Polylectic Acid (PLA)
- Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
- Poly Carbonate (PC)
- High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
